Math Academic Coach

A young woman with dark hair and glasses, wearing a patterned blouse, is smiling warmly at the camera.

LaQuita Sykes

How long have you been teaching? This will be my 12th year of teaching.

What is a major goal you want to accomplish this year?   A major goal that I would like to accomplish this year as a math coach is to establish strong, trust-based relationships with teachers while supporting rigorous and effective student-centered math instruction that leads to improved engagement and achievement

Why do you enjoy teaching? I  love teaching math because of the “lightbulb moments.” Seeing students go from “I don’t get it” to “Ohhh, now I understand!” is deeply rewarding. Math builds confidence through small wins and problem-solving breakthroughs. Math isn’t just about numbers—it builds logic, perseverance, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Many students come to math with anxiety or doubt. I help them build confidence and shift from “I can’t” to “I can.” Even when students struggle, consistent effort leads to measurable growth and it is very rewarding to celebrate academic and personal progress.

What are you most excited about for this upcoming school year? I am most excited about the opportunity to inspire growth, build trust, and spark a love for math. I am excited about building a new kind of math identity - for everyone.
